But Fr. Jenkins of Notre Dame is not the only one lying. In 1967, at the Land O'Lakes conference, the signatory colleges and universities, led by Notre Dame, declared themselves independent of ecclesiastical authority and THEREBY CEASED BEING CATHOLIC. Whenever, and to the extent, a Land O'Lakes signatory college or university represents themselves as Catholic THEY ARE LYING.
From the Statement on the Nature of the Contemporary Catholic University promulgated at Land O'Lakes in 1967 (emphasis mine):
To perform its teaching and research functions effectively the Catholic university must have a true autonomy and academic freedom in the face of authority of whatever kind, lay or clerical, external to the academic community itself.
Not only is it heterodox, it's absurd. According to the Statement, academic freedom somehow makes Catholic universities a law unto themselves, superior to any other authority, civil or ecclesiastical.
That's the bunkum the Land O'Lakes people have been peddling since 1967. Whatever it is, it ain't Catholic. The wonder is that it's taken this long for the Statement's contradictions to become evident.
